Unlimited pupils & teachers DfE statutory word lists £200/school/year, flat

The short version

  • 1 Every pupil in the school gets daily adaptive practice on the statutory common exception words for their working-at level — no teacher input required.
  • 2 Teachers layer on the words they want — this week's class list, a topic like Ancient Egypt, or a spelling rule like silent letters — assigned to a whole class or an individual child.
  • 3 Analysis at every zoom level — individual child, class, or whole school. Plus certificates and collectables to keep them coming back.
The whole-school view

Know who's flying — and who needs a nudge.

Organised by class as well as year group. Everything a subject lead or headteacher needs at a glance, without having to chase a dozen teachers for updates.

Analysis at every zoom level

From one child to the whole school — pick your altitude.

Headteachers, subject leads and class teachers all see the same data, sliced for how they need it.

One child

Individual pupil view

Mastery heatmap, session history, words in review, and the spelling patterns Spello has flagged from their recent answers. The full picture before a parents' evening.

One class

Whole-class view

Engagement by pupil, progress against this week's list, and class-wide pattern alerts when a cluster of children miss the same sound or rule.

Whole school

School-wide view

By class and by year group. See who's engaging across the whole school, spot classes that need a prod, and benchmark year-on-year progress.

What every child practises

The core practice, plus optional layers when you want them.

The common exception words are the always-on backbone for every pupil. Teachers choose if and when to layer in the week's spelling list, a topic, or a spelling pattern — Spello works perfectly well with none of those switched on.

Always on

Statutory common exception words

The DfE statutory spelling programme for Years 1–6. Every pupil practises words at their working-at year — not necessarily their school year — and the level adjusts as they play.

Always on

Their own tricky words

The words this child keeps getting wrong — brought back at the right moment by a spaced-repetition engine, quietly retired once they're mastered.

Optional · teacher-set

This week's class list

If your class uses one. Drop in whatever you're working on this week — Friday's test words, any list your scheme of work calls for — and Spello prioritises them in every pupil's next session until the week's over. Skip it and the always-on practice continues unchanged.

Optional · teacher-set

Topic & spelling-pattern lists

When the timing's right, assign topic lists — Ancient Egypt, Volcanoes, Space — or spelling-pattern lists like silent letters or magic e to individual children or a whole class. Off by default — they only appear once a teacher chooses to introduce them.

Right level, from day one

Every child starts at their real level — not their school year.

The first time a pupil signs in, Spello runs a short placement session — a warm-up a few years below their age, then a deeper probe once it finds their stride. Most children settle inside 20–30 words. No scores shown, no pass/fail, no pressure.

  • Finds the working-at year — often different from a pupil's school year. Spello uses that one, not the age.
  • Adapts as they play — the level drifts up or down on real evidence, not a single wobbly session.
  • Year 1 children skip it entirely and start practising straight away.

Weekly words

Drop in the week's list. Spello does the rest.

Class teachers can add their own list of words each week. Every child in the class sees those words prioritised in their next Spello session — no timetable, no homework hand-out, no nagging.

Once the list is in, you can print a personalised spelling sheet for every child — this week's words to practise, plus a short list of the words that child has been getting wrong on Spello. Parents get a one-page view of exactly what to help with.

  • Edit the list whenever you like — change your mind freely.
  • Two sheets per A4 page — run them through a guillotine and send home.
  • Works alongside the always-on practice — nothing gets paused to make room.

Onboarding

Easy to roll out to the whole school.

Spello is designed so getting from "we've signed up" to "every child is playing at home" is a handful of steps, not a project. Three tools do most of the heavy lifting.

CSV import

Import pupils from any CSV — your MIS export, a class-list spreadsheet, whatever you've got. Spello maps the columns and does the rest. No fiddly per-child forms.

Parent letters

Generate a printable letter for every parent — one-page, personalised, with the child's login details and a quick intro to Spello. Colour or mono so it doesn't punish the school photocopier budget.

Homework-book slips

Eight-up printable login slips with QR codes — the right size to cut out and stick in the front of a homework book. Parents scan, no typing needed.

Wordlists

All the wordlists, open to every teacher.

The full teacher handbook collects the whole set — statutory exception words for Years 1–6, every spelling-pattern list, every topic list — in one printable PDF.

Need just one list for a lesson? Download it on its own, print as many copies as you like, and hand them out in class or send home.

Try before you roll out

See it running first — two ways.

Nobody wants to launch a new tool across every class and hope it lands. Pick whichever feels more useful.

Walk-through demo

A proper look with one of us live — we'll share a screen, walk through the teacher view and the child view, and answer your questions. 20–30 minutes, not a sales call.

Seeded test school

We'll pre-populate your school account with realistic pretend pupils and a few months of play history, so every dashboard, certificate and report shows real-looking numbers. Explore it at your own pace, then swap in your actual pupils when you're ready.

Everything in the schools plan

The detail, if you want it.

Inactive pupils

See exactly who hasn't practised this week, sorted by how long it's been. One nudge at a time.

Pattern alerts

When a cluster of children miss the same sound or rule, Spello surfaces it as a class-wide pattern.

Certificates

Issue printable certificates for milestones — spelling ages, streaks, words mastered. Genuine recognition children can take home.
