Linking a school-enrolled child to your parent account
Why link a school-enrolled child
If your child's school uses Spello, the school will have set up a pupil profile for them — that's enough for the child to play at school and at home. But the school's dashboard is the school's view; it doesn't give you a parent view.
Linking (we call it "claiming") the child to your own parent account gives you:
- A parent dashboard showing that child's progress, session history, mastery heatmap and spelling age.
- The ability to set a daily home time limit — something only a parent can do.
- Notifications when they earn collectables or hit streaks.
The child's school keeps its access — claiming is additive, not exclusive. The school still sees the pupil in their class as before.
What you'll need
- Your own Spello parent account (sign up free at manage.spello.uk).
- Your child's Spello username and password — the same ones they use to log in to play.
Don't know the username and password? They're printed on the onboarding letter that came home from school. If you've mislaid it, ask your child's teacher for another copy — they can print a new one from the Documents page in a few seconds.
Step by step
- Sign in to manage.spello.uk as the parent.
- On the dashboard, click Add a child, then pick My child is already on Spello through their school.
- Type the child's username and password.
- Press Link child.
Spello checks the credentials the same way the play app does, and — if they match — links the child to your parent account. You'll land on their parent-side profile straight away.
Common issues
"We couldn't find a child with those details"
The username or password is wrong. The username is case-insensitive but has to match exactly otherwise — double-check for missing or extra letters. If you've tried a few variants, get a fresh login slip from the teacher to be certain.
"This child is already linked to another Spello parent"
Each child can only be linked to one parent account at a time — so if a previous parent account (yours or another guardian's) has already claimed them, the link won't succeed. Email us at [email protected] and we'll help sort out who's linked and transfer if needed.
"My child is already in your children"
Not an error — just a note that you'd already linked them. Spello takes you straight to their profile.
If you need to unlink later
Because a school-enrolled child's settings are managed by their school, you can't unlink or delete them yourself — the parent dashboard is view-only for school pupils. If you need the link removed (e.g. a new guardian should take over, or you claimed the wrong child), email [email protected] and we'll make the change for you.
