Inviting teachers

Last updated: April 2026

Who can invite teachers

Any existing teacher on a school account can invite another teacher. There's no separate "school admin" role — every teacher at a school has the same set of permissions, and you don't need to nominate one person to be in charge.

Practically, that means most schools have the first teacher who set up the school handle onboarding, then share that workload with the rest of the staff once they're in.

Sending an invitation

  1. Sign in at manage.spello.uk.
  2. Open your school's dashboard and click Teachers.
  3. Type the teacher's email address into the invitation form.
  4. Press Send invitation.

What happens next depends on whether they already have a Spello account:

  • If they do (e.g. they're a parent on Spello and now you're adding their teacher hat) — they're added to the school straight away. Spello emails them a heads-up so they know the school now appears in their dashboard.
  • If they don't — we email them an invitation with a link. Once they click through and set a password, they become a teacher at the school.
Invitations expire after 14 days. If a teacher doesn't accept in time, use Resend on the Teachers page to give them a fresh 14-day window.

What a teacher can do

Once they've joined, a teacher can:

  • See every pupil in the school and their progress.
  • Set this week's spellings for any class (see Weekly spellings).
  • Import pupils from CSV (see Bulk-importing pupils).
  • Print onboarding letters and login slips (see Parent letters and login slips).
  • Invite or remove other teachers.
  • Manage classes — create, rename, assign year groups, delete.
  • Edit a pupil's name, class, username and password.

What teachers can't do is set a pupil's daily home time limit — that's reserved for the child's parent. Everything else school-side is fair game.

Cancelling or resending a pending invitation

Unaccepted invitations show up on the Teachers page alongside the list of active teachers. Use the Resend button next to a pending invitation to email it again (and reset the 14-day expiry); use Cancel to pull it back.

A cancelled invitation can't be un-cancelled — just send a fresh one if you change your mind.

Removing a teacher

From the Teachers page, click the × next to a teacher's name to remove them from the school. Removing a teacher doesn't delete their Spello account — they just lose access to this school's pupils and classes.

You can't remove yourself from a school — you have to ask another teacher at that school to do it for you. (It's a guard against accidentally locking yourself out of a school you meant to stay in.) If you're the only teacher left on the school and need to leave, email us.
